Winemaking notes
Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998, made from 100% Tempranillo, comes from the "El Monte" vineyard in Cenicero, at 430 meters altitude. The grapes were harvested in October 1998 under ideal conditions. After a prolonged maceration of 30 days and malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for 40 months in American oak barrels before bottling in August 2003. It continued to mature in the winery under optimal temperature and humidity conditions.
Viticultural notes
The wine is sourced from the "El Monte" vineyard in Cenicero, characterized by calcareous clay soils with pebbles and vines over 40 years old. This soil naturally regulates production to between 3,000 and 4,000 kilos per hectare. Bodegas Riojanas practices sustainable viticulture without insecticides, herbicides, or pesticides, preserving biodiversity and soil health.
Tasting notes
The wine features an intense ruby red color with orange-brown hues. It offers powerful aromas of cherry and licorice, with notes of oak, vanilla, spices, and subtle toasty elements. On the palate, it is harmonious, elegant, and velvety, with excellent acidity and a long finish where the flavors linger, revealing its complexity.
Pairing notes
To fully appreciate Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998, it is recommended to decant the wine slightly before serving. This allows the aromas to open up and reveal their complexity. The wine pairs perfectly with sauced dishes such as cod and should be served at a temperature of around 16-18°C to express its richness and elegance.
